I Didn’t Know
The day you asked me
if I’d marry you
how could I have foresee
when we said I do
And the wedding was over
on that very same day
word coming from Dover
that you’re called away
How could I ever know
you’d be taken from me
before the bouquet I’d throw
or the reception we’d see
Rice still in the packet
the sound of running feet
making such a loud racket
as our eyes would meet
“I’m so sorry,” was said
“Darling, I love you!”
as away you were led
with the groomsmen too
No, I didn’t know
left crying I’d be
’cause you had to go
fight for our country
Just be safe, baby,
wherever you may go
and come home so maybe
that reception we’ll throw!

For you, Nate, and Military Appreciation Week
Left Standing Alone
You left me standing alone
The church was full today
The ringing of my cell phone
I wanted to run away
I’m sorry’s all you said
With so many staring faces
Wished you were dead
A tear my cheek traces
Was none of it meant?
The passion was it fake?
When we lay together spent
Was all a big mistake?
Hate you for doing this
Should have told me before
And given me a kiss
Before you hit the door.

Poetry Potluck Week 48:
Passionate Nights of Love
I Am Temptation
I am temptation
Let me entice you
There is no wrong
In whatever you do
Life is for pleasure
To only feel good
Indulge yourself in it
I think you should
I won’t lead you
where you shouldn’t be
You will be safe
In my company
Have no concern for
What God has to say
Come follow me
He’s not there anyway
You can not resist
My lure and appeal
Don’t worry, I insist
Your soul I won’t steal.

My Ship
I have waited and waited
down here by the sea
for your ship to come in
darling, where can you be?
As my tears fall softly
they mix with the rain
did your ship wreck
and are you in pain?
Thoughts of our passionate
nights of love-making
run through my head
yet my heart is breaking
I look to the horizon
but my effort’s in vain
though your ship’s not there
with all hope I remain
My darling, my husband
where can you be?
Forever will I wait
for you by the sea.

Poetry Potluck Week 48 Entry
The Sands of Time
The sands of time
in your hourglass
You should not waste
on what doesn’t last
For they constantly fall
down toward our end
Be careful on what
your sand you spend
Don’t dream them away
on castles to make
Or the important things
you will often forsake
And they’ll run out
before you do find
The path you’re on
is the wrong kind
The sands of time
wait for no one
To the Father and Son
it’s time to run.

Dance With Me
Come with me dance
my sugar plum fairy
While we’ve the chance
let us be merry
While the snow falls
’round the sugar tree
Before winter’s end calls
dance sugar plum fairy
In your ballet sweet
through the snow glide
With bows we meet
prancing side to side
Comes the final dip
when our dance is done
As away we slip
with the setting sun.
